Founder

Founded in 1995 by Deborah A. Davis, a survivor of her own brother's suicide, Survivors of Suicide of Northeast Florida (SOS) is part of a national network of support groups for families and friends who have lost a loved one to suicide. 

A native of Philadelphia, Ms. Davis received a B.A. in Psychology from American University in Washington, DC and received her training in suicide prevention at the Suicide Prevention Center of Jacksonville (SPC) in 1992. A trained Crisis Counselor, Ms. Davis served for three years as a volunteer on the suicide prevention hotline and later as a Board Member and Chairman of SPC. In addition, she was one of the original community organizers in the state of Florida for Suicide Prevention Advocacy Network (SPAN), a national grassroots organization. In 1995, she received her training  for assisting survivors of suicide from Iris M.Bolton, Founder of SOS Groups nationwide.  

Ms. Davis has also served as a Board Member of the Mental Health Association of Northeast Florida and has been an invited speaker for several organizations including the U.S. Navy, The Internal Revenue Service and various church and civic groups.

Patterned after the nationally recognized SOS Chapter in Atlanta, Survivors of Suicide of Northeast Florida has offered support and education to hundreds of families.

SOS is a 501 (c)(3) corporation, incorporated under the laws of the State of Florida and is not affiliated with any political, religious, or other charitable organization. SOS depends on contributions from individuals for its financial support and all donations are tax deductible.
